Assignment
You
have received a referral from Cobb Legal Aid for Renee Price, who is
petitioning Superior Court for a twelve-month protective order against her
husband, Clay Price.
Read
Ms. Price's intake memo, petition, and ex-parte order which are posted in Clio in the DV-Price Matter and prepare for your initial
client consultation, which may be simulated during class on January30 or February 6 (i.e. with you interviewing someone playing the role of Price as if this was your firstl meeting with your actual domestic violence client.) We recommend that you first review the key provisions of the Family Violence Act, OCGA 19-13-1 to 19-13-4 on pp. 4:97 to 4:102 of your Domestic Violence Binder, also assigned for reading for Week 3.
After
reading Ms. Price's documents, refer to 5 Step Patient-Centered Interviewing on page 30 of Smith's Patient-Centered Interviewing. Prepare your outline for the initial client
consultation by writing out the exact words you plan to use for items A.1- B.3.
You do not need to write out exact words for item B.3 (though you may want to
do so for some questions, especially if you want to be careful about how you
ask that question).
A. Your
interview must include (but not be limited to) the items below.
1.
Introduction of yourself.
2. An explanation of your role.
3. An explanation of the scope of your representation..
4.
A forecast of what you would like to accomplish during the client meeting.
B. You must learn the following information from Ms. Price during the interview:
1.
A time that she is available to meet again before the day of the hearing.
2. A list of all issues Price wants to discuss.
3.
Her story and goals (please use open-ended questions as appropriate).
4.
Any other important information about her story based on your review of her petition and the intake memo (please formulate at least three open-ended questions.)
Include
an annotation at the end of each question denoting the question type, as
articulated in Smith using the following abbreviations:
O = open-ended question Y/N = Yes/No question Cl = other closed-ended question
Co= compound question S=summary Fr=Framing
Ex.
Tell me more about your car accident. (O)
